While it would be great to have an engine that never fails, no engine is without fault. Some, however, are better than others. The 7.3 powerstroke turbo, which is found in certain Ford vehicles, is a legendary engine that can last several years if it’s well cared for. While a sturdy engine, issues can still arise. Here are some of the most common issues you may encounter with a Powerstroke.
Cam Position Sensor
When there’s something wrong with your cam position sensor, your engine may not start. If you’re driving when the issue starts, your engine may shut off on you. One way to determine if the cam position sensor is the problem is to watch your tachometer for movement when you crank the engine. If there’s no tach movement, the sensor needs to be replaced.
Injection Pressure Regulator Valve
The injection pressure regulator valve, which is located on the high pressure oil pump, can face a few problems. The sensor can go bad, seals might get damaged, or the valve can get stuck. These issues can prevent the engine from starting. After located the valve, check for damaged wires and make sure that the nut is tight. The valve can be rebuilt or replaced.
There are a few issues that can result in overheating. Common causes include problems with the water pump, coolant, radiator, and thermostat. Most of these components are easy to replace and the parts do not expensive.
Under Valve Cover Harness Connectors
Sometimes, the connectors can come loose or short out. If either of these situations occurs, the engine may run rough or die. You can easily check the four connectors (which are located under the valve covers) for cuts, burns, or other damage. Any damaged wires can easily be replaced to fix the problem.
Issues with your Powerstroke engine can be frustrating. Fortunately, many of these issues are fairly affordable and simple to fix.
