Vauxhall Astra VXR
The much anticipated Vauxhall Astra VXR is meant to be released later this year. It certainly has the right performance credentials thanks to a turbocharged 2.0-litre engine that produces 240bhp. The styling is suitably hot hatch-esque too with a bulging body kit, a central exhaust and large alloy wheels.
But while it looks good, the VXR isn’t that enjoyable to drive. The ride is simply too firm, the power delivery is anything but smooth and the steering lacks feel. While it is undoubtedly hard-edged, other hot hatches offer more enjoyment and refinement.
Prices will start from £5,500, and range to and from that price, to about £15,000. Its price and gadget-count may impress on first acquaintance, but the Astra feels old now. The interior and driving position feel off the pace in today’s hot hatch market.
For price and practicality, the cheaper and identically powered SEAT Leon Cupra has it licked. If you want a characterful, special edition hot hatch, a lightly used Renaultsport Megane R26.R delivers greater pace, a more beguiling driving experience and true individuality for less cash.
